Ever wanted a dog that was already extremely well trained? Ever wanted to skip the hard puppy phases?

Look no further! We call them washouts...

What is a Service Dog washout?

We need our dogs to be the best of the best in order to successfully take care of their person & to have a long, happy career. All dogs have unique quirks & characteristics, some of which may deem them unsuitable for service work.

Occasionally we also have dogs who we pull due to stress in crowded spaces, or for health reasons. These dogs are fully obedience trained, most are off leash/ecollar trained, & have extensive socialization & environmental exposure.

What can they do?

All of our washouts are previously task trained service dogs. They would do well with in-home service work, sports, or just being a loved family companion. They enjoy going pet friendly places with you & going on adventures.

Is there a cost associated with them?

Of course, we have put a lot of time, money, & supplies into these dogs. Now, our rehome fee does not even remotely break us even, even on vetting but it is important to us that these dogs find their perfect homes. Our rehome dogs are $2500. This gets you an ecollar, their bowl & bucket, integration training to help you all know how to handle your new dog, as well as follow up support & discounted further training.

Inquire about one of our dogs, meet them, & we may be able to be a bit flexible with placement cost for the perfect placement.

Ozzie

Ozzie is a 4 year old Standard Poodle who came to us from a home where he was working as a fully trained service dog. The owner didn't feel like they were the right fit for each other & wanted to see him in a home where he could work & be loved.

Ozzie came into our home & it was only a couple of days before I knew in my gut something was wrong with him. He wasn't eating & he was more underweight than normal. We immediately got him in with our vet. She suspected it may be Addison's Disease but we ran blood work & tried an appetite stimulant to see how he would respond. We were back a week later & Ozzie was diagnosed with atypical Addison's Disease. Once he was on medication he started eating, drinking, & gaining weight. His energy & personality began to liven up again & I was incredibly thankful. At one point he was so thin I was worried he was going to die on us.

Ozzie still has the drive & desire to help but it isn't fair to ask a dog to work when they have their own condition. Ozzie's Addison's doesn't prevent him from doing anything except public access. He will happily work from home, go on pet friendly adventures, & would excel in sports & performance events.

Ozzie's Addison's treatment consists of a shot every 28 days, & daily prednisolone currently. The plan is to wean him onto a smaller dose once he is situated in his new home. He does not need regular electrolyte testing like some dogs as even in the midst of being in shock for sometime before we got him he maintained them at his worst. We can tell if he is flared by monitoring his food & water intake & if he does we raise his oral steroid dose for a few days.

Ozzie will come home with a vial of his medication, as well as, a bottle of his oral medication to make sure his treatment is not a concern. He is up to date on everything else & I am happy to report Ozzie (who was once down to 36 lbs in all of this) has gained over 15 pounds since starting treatment & is the healthiest weight I have ever seen him!

Shelby

Shelby is a 3 year old Chocolate Labrador who came to us through our rehome project. She came from a family who had 3 under 5 & they just didn't have the time they felt she deserved. She is an incredible dog temperament wise & she passed our testing with ease. She was about 9 months old at the time.

Shelby continued to thrive & enjoy working & being out in public & had been moved to a soft match, meaning she had to have her OFAs done to ensure her joints could handle doing mobility work. She & her person were growing & she was thriving.

In a very rare occurrence, Shelby went into a late fear period during a heat cycle & our once most confident happy go lucky dog was a bag of anxiety everytime she heard something loud like thunder, or if she perceived something as scary in public. I temporarily pulled her from public access to allow her to mature & grow, hoping she would bounce back like my Harley did when something similar happened to her.

Months later she ws easing back into public access & making slow but steady progress. After a disheartening experience with her intended handler I consulted with some of my trainer friends/colleagues & took Shelby back to the same place we had gone the day before where everything went a muck. She was her happy confident self with instant recovery from the one sound that she even showed slightly concern over. We made the tough decision to pull her match & continued to work with her. She was still doing really well but every once & while she would have a hard time settling in a chaotic environment.

This caused me to make the hard decision to pull her from public access placement as I did not think it would be fair to Shelby or the disabled handler she would be matched with to take on the burden of a dog who occasionally may get overwhelmed. We started sharing about her new path & she was even evaluated by a local detection trainer who felt that she would make a great detection dog & who raved on her environmental soundness & confidence in public (we went to tractor supply).

Shelby has been exposed to swimming, fastcat, scent introduction, as well as, has a fantastic retrieval. She has extensive experience with children, other dogs, & cats.

Oh & a little fun fact about Shelby... she LOVES to sing with me!!
